The Field Hockey team is starting off their season with high hopes. They’re coming off a third place finish last year in the Centennial Conference with a record of twelve and five.
Senior Captain Liz Baron was a big part of that success last year. She ranked second on the team in points to then-Senior Hayward Sawyers. This year, she is confident in the new First-years and the new team dynamic.
“This year we brought in a really strong group of freshman,” said Baron. “As a returning player it is hard to connect with the new people on the field but it is working really well so far. My coaches and the other captains are very confident.”
First-year Forward Samantha Wright is ecstatic about her new team. “On this team as a freshman, you don’t feel like a freshman,” said Wright. “You don’t get treated like you are the bottom. The coaches are very supportive and they are great teachers.”
With a strong batch of first-years, the team has a lot of self-assurance. Last year, the team’s season was ended in Lancaster by Haverford in the semi-finals. Baron said that the captains came up with a new theme this year: “Make It Happen.”
“It can be anything from winning the championship, winning every home game we have, or scoring the first goal in a game,” said Baron. “It can be whatever you want it to be but we all have to be on the same page to make it happen”.
One thing that Baron would like the team to improve on this year is to keep the momentum strong throughout the whole game.
“Our biggest obstacle is playing a full game as best as we can,” said Baron. “We often have a dip of intensity in the middle of the game,” which often hurts the final score. Also, Senior goalie Alexis Bralow commented on the teams struggle to stick with their own strategy bringing the ball down the field. “If we are against a team that likes drive the ball down the field we tend to do the same which is very risky,” said Bralow.
So far, the Bullets have won three of their first four games, including both home games. They will play their first Centenniel Conference opponent this Saturday against Ursinus in Collegevile, P.A. They will play in their first CC home game on Sept. 28th against Haverford.
