Musicians going abroad

In January of 2014, the Sunderman Conservatory will take members of both the Wind Symphony and the Symphony Orchestra across the world for a performance tour of China and Singapore.  This will be the first international tour for these ensembles at Gettysburg College.

“My friends and I still randomly break out in exclamations of ‘We’re going to China!’  We’re all so excited to go abroad and share our love of music with the world,” first-year music major and Wind Symphony member Meg Sutter said.

This tour will take place over 14 days and 12 nights and include five major cities—Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Singapore.  Students will have the opportunity to perform in at least four concert halls, as well as to interact with musicians from both the Xian Music Conservatory and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore.

“This tour is such a fantastic opportunity to learn and share music, from grand performance halls and world-renowned conservatories to elementary schools,” said Katie Burke, a sophomore member of Wind Symphony.

Director of Bands Russell McCutcheon, along with Symphony Orchestra Director Alexander Kahn, and other members involved in this process, chose a tour of China and Singapore because of the countries’ amazing histories and cultures.
