On Saturday, October 3, the annual Salsa on the Square celebration allowed both students and locals to mingle under the orange glow of downtown Gettysburg’s streetlights and celebrate Hispanic heritage while raising money for Project Gettysburg-Leòn.

Despite the looming threat of rain, the event was still able to take place. The event was supported by many student volunteers who came out to help set up, participate and clean up.

While a live band played, people queued up for snacks and drinks pro- vided by local coffee shops and the Servo truck. The music, performed amidst colored lights and a large collection of instruments, varied from upbeat salsa to intricate merengue to the romantic tango.

Project Gettysburg- Leòn (PGL) is a cooperative organization consisting of members of Adams County, Pennsylvania and students from Gettysburg College who seek to foster friendship and understanding between Gettysburg and its sister city, Leòn, Nicaragua. According to its website, PGL was begun in the ‘80s in the midst of the Sandinista-Contra conflict and has since sought to support “sustainable development projects in Leòn and promote friendship, education and cultural exchange between the communities.”
