Sophomore Matthew Robinson has made a successful return to the Gettysburg College cross-country team this season. Robinson is a consistent top five finisher for the team, and he placed second for the team and 81st out of 217 total competitors at Saturday’s Kutztown University DII/DIII challenge.

“Cross country is a team sport; everybody counts towards the scoring,” said Robinson. “Everybody has to have a positive attitude about the team, and each member has an effect on the team whether you are working with a teammate in a race or supporting them on the sideline.”

Robinson has crossed the finish line before all of the Gettysburg runners with the exception of senior captain Ben Taber, and this race was no different. Robinson crossed the line at a time of 28:07 Saturday, which was the first 8k race of the season for the men.

Robinson developed into a consistent top seven runner for the Orange & Blue last season before he suffered a calf strain in early September that led to be a nagging ailment for a majority of the season.

Nine of the Bullets’ teammates graduated in May, so Robinson has worked to fill the position behind Taber in order to keep the Bullets in contention this season

“A lot of meets come down to a few points. It is the displacers that can push the other teams back just enough to win a meet,” said Robinson.

While Taber has been the team’s top finisher every race, the Bullets are competitive because of runners like Robinson pulling their weight from behind in a sport where seven runners can dot the score sheet. Congratulations to Matthew Robinson for being this week’s Bullet of the Week.
