On behalf of the Interfraternity Council , the Panhellenic Council, the Fraternity Presidents and the Sorority Presidents, we the under signed leaders of the Gettysburg College Greek Life Community condemn the actions of individuals who use social media websites to post degrading anonymous slurs against fellow Gettysburg College groups and students. We see this behavior as a disgusting representation of a vulgar few who have no place within our collective organization, or on our campus.

We find it shameful that these insensitive remarks have in no way reflected the progress of the Greek Community. We commit ourselves to the tenets of the College Mission Statement, specifically “the worth and dignity of all people,” to lead us through these trying times. No student should ever have to fear for their safety.

The events surrounding the misuse of social media reveals how far our organizations have to go to actively promote inclusion of all persons regardless of culture, background, ethnicity, or orientation. We feel compelled to ask ourselves how we can open our doors, become more inclusive, and take immediate actions in becoming part of the solution.

Lastly, we see this as an opportunity for our greater community to join together and practice “a sense of the inter-relatedness of all knowledge” and “sensitivity to the human condition”, which we pledge ourselves to when becoming a member of the Gettysburg College Community. We have confidence in this College and in our ability to continue moving forward, recognize our differences, accept them, and celebrate our individuality.
